Response Time (Monitors)

How quickly a pixel can change from one color to another, measured in milliseconds (ms). Lower response times reduce motion blur and ghosting in fast-moving scenes.

What is response time?

Response time measures how fast a pixel can transition from one color to another, typically measured as GtG (gray-to-gray) in milliseconds. A 1ms GtG monitor transitions faster than a 4ms GtG monitor, resulting in less motion blur and ghosting during fast movement.

Panel type heavily affects response time: TN panels are fastest (1ms) but have poor viewing angles and color. IPS panels are 1-4ms with great color. VA panels are 3-8ms with the best contrast. OLED panels are <0.1ms — effectively instant — with perfect contrast and color.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does response time matter for gaming?

Yes, but it's less important than refresh rate. A 144Hz monitor with 4ms response time is far better than a 60Hz monitor with 1ms response time. For competitive gaming, aim for 1ms GtG IPS or OLED. For casual gaming, anything under 5ms GtG is fine.
